TABLE Method™

A facilitation sequence, not a diagnosis.

TABLE can apply to a single move, a game, a session, or a multiweek cohort. It is a facilitation sequence for deliberately using structured play to create, observe, and process human interaction. Not therapy. Not a diagnosis. It is not a treatment protocol, or a claim that playing a board game is inherently therapeutic.

T · A · B · L · E

T · Target

What is this table meant to practice, reveal, or make possible?

A · Assess

What can this table safely and productively handle right now?

B · Build

What conditions will create the right kind of opportunity?

L · Lead

How do I participate from within the game while tracking the human system?

E · Extract & Extend

What happened, what did it mean, and what is worth carrying beyond the table?

Do not choose a popular game and invent the goal afterward. Build is where Game-to-Goal lives. Lead is where Embedded Facilitation lives.

When it is recognizably TABLE

A session is recognizably TABLE when an attentive facilitator can see a purposeful target, an assessment of readiness, deliberate construction of game conditions, embedded facilitation that preserves agency, and a debrief or extension proportionate to the setting.

It fails fidelity when it is merely “play a game and talk afterward,” or when the facilitator over-controls participants in the name of therapeutic intent.

Strong line: Shape the encounter, not the person.

Debrief ladder (public form)

  1. Board: What happened in the game?
  2. Self: What did you notice in yourself?
  3. Group: What happened between people?
  4. Life/Work: Where else does that pattern show up, if anywhere?
  5. Extension: What is one small behavior worth trying outside the table?

Not every session must reach all five. Stop where the group is honest. Never force personal disclosure because the game produced emotionally useful material. Debrief the board before asking people to personalize.

Compressed shorthand in some internal notes is “Board first, self second, life third.” That three-rung line is shorthand only. The public debrief on this page is the five-rung ladder above.
